Pollutants

Air pollution is a serious problem. It is that dangerous as the damage is often caused by invisible matters. Yes, it is true: a lot of air pollution is invisible. So it is not possible to identify the pollution, which hurts us by ourselves. In the following the most dangerous pollutants, which impair our health and welfare are described. Four of these six matters are produced by burning. The action of burning coal, oil, natural gas or wood influences the lungs as well as the environment.

Nitrogen Dioxide

This chemical compound (NO2) is one of the numerous nitrogen oxides. About millions of tons of NO2 are produced every year by the industry. It can be identified by its brown toxic gas with a sharp and bitter smell. As well Nitrogen Dioxide is a quietly famous pollutant.

Ozone

This allotrope is an air pollutant with dangerous effects. It influences the respiration of animals. As well, it is able to burn delicate plants. These are the damages in the lower atmosphere. In the upper atmosphere ozone protects the Earth from dangerous electromagnetic radiation.

Carbon Monoxide

The so called carbonous oxide (CO), is a colorless, scentless, tasteless gas. As well it is lighter than air. In higher concentrations it can be toxic for living beings. In combination with oxygen it is able to form carbon dioxide and ozone.

Sulfur Dioxide

This chemical compound (SO2) is a toxic gas. It is produced by industrial processes as well as in volcanoes. Acid rain is caused by the oxidation of SO2.

Particulate Matter

These matters are also known as fine particles. They can be made by mankind or natural.

Lead

The main-group element lead is also called by its Latin name – Plumbum. It is a heavy metal and causes damages to animals and human beings. The nervous system, brain or blood can be touched by it.
